Message First of all, i'm not argueing HP figures, i agree that LS1 equipped Camaros and Firebirds are underrated, my gut instinct would be they arn't as powerfull as a corvette, but i know what doesnt count for anything. What i do know is that horsepower figures arnt nearly everything. A RX-7 makes 255 horsepower, yet its almost as fast as a 300 HP Z to 60 mph. A Viper (pre-2003) makes 450 hp, but a z06(405 hp) is equally fast. Gearing, weight, traction, torque all influence things, so a 3000GT VR-4 can run really fast 0-60 and then fall way behind a Z quarter mile because its all wheel drive helps it on the low end, the same way a LS1's monster torque helps it. Explaint me how a bottem-end-heavy car can pull away from a turbo equiped Z in the quarter mile?

2nd, i don't doubt you have been told by GM owners that their cars are really fast, we all know domestic muscle car owners are 2nd only to rice boys in the amount of BS-ing they will make about their cars (Friend of mine with a 95 Mustag GT convertable often claims he can take a manual NA Z) but just because someone quotes a preformance figure from a message board doesn't make it official. I realize that im quoting times as well, but they come from professional automotive magazines form people who spend their lives driveing cars alot faster than a Camaro (the same Car and Driver peopele you are claiming cant get good times in a Camaro are the ones who voted the z32 to their 10 best list 7 years in a row, and noone said they didnt know what they were talking about then). If you want I can look up Motor Trend, Automobile, and Road and Track Times as well, but look at what you are comparing them to: people who own the cars who may or not be honest and you have no idea if they are or not, and popular mechanics, a magazine that has little to do with cars. IF the Camaro was as fast as you claim, wouldnt GM at least try to capitialize on the speed with Corvette adds? If a Corvette could easily run high 12s, i'd think Chevy would advertise that, even if they wont advertise the Camaro to keep sales of corvette's high. Not to mention that i think Chevy would "break the silence" so to speak about the Camaro being as fast as a corvette before they let the model die and incur the costs of closing its plant and developing a new model for (2004?) not to mention all of the lost sales?

Also, even though some members of GM message boards claim certain times in their cars, it doesn't meen they know more than the manufactures. Take TT.net for example: if i post a question asking about Z quarter mile times, there are many very knowledgeable and helpfull people who may post to my assistance, but there are also hundereds of Newbies or idiots who have no idea, but will post nonetheless. Heck, even Jack B may deicde to throw in a nice 15.0 second optinion, so just because someone posts it, it doenst meen they know their stuff.

Finally, about your link to the site with the slip showing the z28 run 12.8, you're taking the word of a private GeoCities site, but saying Car and Driver doesnt know their stuff? I can make a GeoCities site that shows a Civic SI runnig the quarter in 11 flat, and say its completely stock and even photoshop it to make it look real, but thats not gonna make the civic any faster than it is, same for the Camaro.
